ACCOUNTING AND FINANCES

GuideStar provides financial information on individual nonprofit organizations, as well as articles and information of general interest.

The IRS website posts tax information for charities and nonprofits.

BBB Wise Giving Standards. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance Standards for Charity Accountability were developed to assist donors in making sound giving decisions and to foster public confidence in charitable organizations.

Nonprofit Finance Fund provides technical assistance and loans to nonprofit organizations undertaking capital projects and facility improvements, including assistance in the planning and management of relocations, renovations, and equipment for systems upgrades. Short-term financing up to $500,000 is available at below market rates.


COMPUTERS AND TECHNOLOGY

Fund for the City of New York. The academy offers a wide series of workshops in various software programs.

Nonprofit Computing, Inc. has donated computer systems to give to nonprofits. It also has volunteers available to advise on software and MIS.

TechSoup connects nonprofit organizations with donated and discounted technology products.


FOUNDATIONS

Association of Small Foundations is a membership organization of foundations with five or fewer staff. It helps in all aspects of foundation work: public relations, writing letters, cutting checks, mailing and processing grant applications, working with trustees and grantees, doing site visits and evaluations, managing assets, tax matters, etc.

Council of New Jersey Grantmakers provides education, resources and a forum for collaboration among grantmakers and contributions managers throughout the region. The council acts as a voice for its members in the state and as a synergist among and between New Jersey's public and private sectors to promote effective philanthropy.

Council on Foundations works to support foundations by promoting knowledge, growth and action in philanthropy. Their site offers workshops, publications and tools. Members have access to virtual resources.

The Foundation Center is the nation's leading authority on institutional philanthropy and is dedicated to serving grantseekers, grantmakers, researchers, policymakers, the media, and the general public through its website, print and electronic publications, five library/learning centers, and a national network of cooperating collections.

New York Foundation for the Arts is committed to helping sponsors develop programs that serve as a bridge between artists and community resources, thereby providing a forum for public discourse within the arts. It also functions as the fiscal conduit for small arts organizations and individual artists.

New York Regional Association of Grantmakers brings together representatives of independent and corporate foundations to facilitate communication and information sharing, and promotes effective grantmaking through programs, services and resources to members and to others in the philanthropic community.


FUNDRAISING AND DEVELOPMENT

American Association of Fundraising Counsel publishes Giving USA, an annual report that provides the latest facts and figures on philanthropic giving cross the United States.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS provides AIDS fundraising and grantmaking.

Changing Our World, Inc.'s services include fundraising and development outsourcing, capital campaigns, major gift efforts, planned giving, a philanthropy division for corporate and personal philanthropy, and on-line fundraising and communications.

Chronicle of Philanthropy is a bi-weekly newspaper with just about everything you ever wanted to know about fundraising. There are articles on trends in the field, how to get money, who is giving, why people are giving, and much more.

Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)'s Matching Gifts Clearinghouse enables businesses to match their employees' donations to educational and other worthy causes. CASE maintains a comprehensive database of more than 7,700 parent companies, divisions, and subsidiaries with matching gifts programs. The Clearinghouse provides a variety of products and free services to support matching gift programs. They help development professionals raise more money for education, cultural organizations and social service charities. They also work with companies to improve their matching gifts programs or to start one, as well as helping matching gift administrators to tackle ethical and program issues.


GOVERNANCE

Governance Matters, formerly Alliance for Nonprofit Governance (ANG) is a coalition of nonprofit organizations concerned about good governance in the nonprofit sector. ANG holds conferences and events and offers resources to promote effective nonprofit governance.

"Board Q & A" section is especially useful for new nonprofit board members with questions about nonprofit governance.

Volunteer Consulting Group (VCG) is the sponsoring organization for boardnetUSA. VCG helps organizations build effective board/staff partnerships, consulting on such key issues as growth, transition, leadership succession and board responsibilities.


LEGAL SERVICES

Lawyers Alliance of New York, with the help of volunteer attorneys, provides free or low-cost legal assistance to community development organizations, childcare providers and nonprofit organizations in New York City. It also provides a complete range of non-litigation business law services to nonprofit organizations that are working to improve the quality of life in low-income communities in New York City.

New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, provides free legal assistance to community-based organizations through a referral network of private law firms and corporate law departments. These firms handle a wide range of matters including corporate tax, employment, real estate, financial arrangements and zoning advice. In addition, they may take on litigation involving an array of issues such as housing, civil rights, disability rights, employment and environmental discrimination.

Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts helps individual artists and arts organizations with legal issues through its pro bono lawyer volunteer programs.


PRODUCT DONATIONS AND PURCHASING

Joint Purchasing Corporation (JPC) works to find the best prices for supplies to meet the procurement needs of nonprofit healthcare organizations.

Materials for the Arts recycles business furniture and materials donated by companies and organizations to nonprofit arts organizations and individual artists involved in public projects. It is a joint program of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and the NYC Department of Sanitation.

National Association for the Exchange of Industrial Resources (NAEIR) accepts donations of new or overstocked products from corporations and redistributes them to nonprofit organizations and schools. The recipient groups pay yearly dues, and shipping and handling of the merchandise is free.


VOLUNTEERING

Mayor's Volunteer Center interviews and refers volunteers to opportunities in 3,000 nonprofit and public agencies. They also provide consultation on the development of volunteer programs for agencies, schools and businesses.

New York Cares mobilizes more than 2,000 volunteers each month to serve on flexibly-scheduled, team-based projects that are coordinated in partnership with schools, community centers, parks, gardens and other social service organizations throughout New York City.

OTHER RESEARCH AND RESOURCES

Alliance for Nonprofit Management's FAQ section provides general answers to commonly asked questions regarding board development, financial management, strategic planning, fundraising and risk management.

Alliance for the Arts gathers, analyses and publishes information about the arts in New York. It promotes New York's cultural life and identifies the needs, contributions and issues facing members of the artistic community.

Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York) is a service and advocacy for nonprofit theatres and related organizations in New York City. Services include low-cost office space, management-related technical assistance, grantmaking to small and emerging theatres through the Fund for Small Theatres and the Nancy Quinn Fund. This organization also produces audience development initiatives and advocates for the arts at both the state and local levels.

Arts & Business Council is a national organization that promotes mutually beneficial partnerships between corporations and nonprofit arts groups. Programs include local business volunteers for the arts, national arts marketing projects, Arts Work NY (a job listing), ConEdison Multicultural Internship Program, and Arts for Hope (a program using resources to deal with the impact of Sept. 11th on the arts community).

Asian American Arts Alliance provides a centralized information network, vital resources, advocacy services and ongoing technical assistance to Asian American artists and organizations. Its mission is to increase the support, recognition and appreciation of Asian American arts.

Asian American Federation of New York provides public policy and community service leadership to identify and meet the critical needs of Asian Americans in the New York metropolitan area. The Federation serves the Asian American community by analyzing issues and voicing common concerns, advocating for responsive policies, offering financial and management assistance, coordinating service delivery and creating unified, community-wide initiatives.

Association of Hispanic Arts provides programs for Latino arts organizations and individual artists to give them a competitive edge in today's multi-faceted arts field. The technical assistance program offers workshops and seminars that address a range of needs, including planning and management, fundraising, grantwriting, marketing, artist residencies and resources, and legal issues. AHA Regrant Programs awards small grants to Latino arts organizations in New York with little or no access to traditional sources or funding.

The Attorney General's Charities Bureau offers resources, articles and reports pertaining to charitable organizations.

Cause Effective is a New York-based nonprofit that helps nonprofit organizations build their capacities to develop human and financial resources through consulting, workshops and publications. Cause Effective helps nonprofits plan and implement special events, train and develop their Boards, manage individual donors, enlist and manage volunteers, and promote and market their organizations.

Urban Institute, and maintains a large amount of valuable data on the nonprofit sector. The site also has links to a variety of listservs that researchers may want to join.

The Century Foundation is a research foundation that undertakes timely and critical analyses of major economic, political and social institutions and issues.

Community Resource Exchange is a nonprofit organization that provides management assistance to nonprofit organizations serving the poor and disenfranchised. It provides services in the areas of boards, human resources, financial management, organizational development and fundraising.

Community Service Society of New York offers programs that support, train and provide information and resources to social service professionals, as well as other agencies and community-based organizations.

Council of Senior Centers and Services of New York City, Inc. (CSCS) represents 265 senior service organizations. CSCS provides services such as advocacy at the city, state and federal levels. It also offers training programs, technical assistance and customized consultation. For member organizations, CSCS helps with dealing with government agencies and other funders.

Education Center for Community Organizing (ECCO), at the Hunter College School of Social Work, works to strengthen the effectiveness of neighborhood organizers and human service agencies. ECCO offers workshops, conferences, festivals, forums, consultations, written materials, training and skills development. Some of their special projects include Computers for Social Change, the Women's Organizers' Project, and the Child Welfare Organizing Project.

Gifts-in-Kind International connects nonprofit organizations with a wide variety of donated and discounted products.

The Gilbert Center has analyzed websites of nonprofit organizations dealing with children and youths, the environment, and the disabled, and has published their studies. By the end of the project, the center hopes to have developed some tools and benchmarks that will be useful to nonprofit organizations in either starting or enhancing their web-based communication strategies.

Hispanic Federation of New York is a membership organization of Latino health and human services agencies serving Hispanics in the tri-state area. It assists agencies with fund development by providing technical assistance in proposal writing and fundraising. HF also pursues a variety of activities and programs to advocate on behalf of the Latino community, including conducting an annual survey and sponsoring regional symposia and conferences to address issues in the Hispanic community. Their technical assistance involves services such as strategic planning, program development, legal assistance, management training and technical development.

Human Services Council The Human Services Council (HSC) is the Voice of the Human Services Community. They represent thousands of not-for-profit organizations in New York City and advocate for the needs of the human services sector as a whole. Focus areas include public policy and advocacy, technology improvement, disaster preparedness and response, and government contracting.

Independent Sector is a membership organization with a good site for researchers and visitors who want to learn more about the state of the nonprofit (or independent) sector. There are links to articles and reports prepared by major nonprofit organizations and research centers dealing with volunteering, public policy and lobbying.

International Center for the Disabled provides multiple services for people with a variety of disabilities. These services include rehabilitation, vocational training, independent living skills, counseling and a learning disability clinic.

Internet Nonprofit Center has some very useful information and some very outdated stuff. Its FAQs are uneven but surprising. Try it.

National Center for Charitable Statistics is the national repository of data on the nonprofit sector in the United States. Its mission is to develop and disseminate high quality data on nonprofit organizations and their activities for use in research on the relationships between the nonprofit sector, government, commercial sector, and broader civil society. The Center was established in 1982 and has been a program of the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy (CNP) at the Urban Institute since July 1996, when it was transferred from the research division of Independent Sector.

New York Academy of Medicine focuses its research efforts on issues that affect urban health from children's health insurance programs to the impact of HIV/AIDS.

Nonprofit Connection assists nonprofit organizations by providing training and consulting services in organizational development so that they may be more effective in the operation and delivery of their services.

Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York (NPCC) is dedicated to strengthening the role and voice of the nonprofit sector in the NYC metropolitan area and provides management services in areas such as liability insurance, retirement plans, health benefits and group purchasing plans. NPCC's Federal Grants Information Service is an automated phone system that provides information on federal funding opportunities that appear in the Federal Registrar.

The Nonprofit Genie is a nonprofit resource portal. Its FAQs and Links sections are particularly useful for nonprofit organizations.

The Nonprofit Good Practice Guide captures and organizes good practices to assist nonprofits in improving their efficiency and effectiveness. The Guide, with nine topic areas, is designed as a resource directory and capacity building tool for new nonprofit managers. The Guide is a project of the Philanthropic and Nonprofit Knowledge Management Initiative at the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership.

Organization Development Network is an association of organization development practitioners representing a range of professional roles in a wide variety of organizations. The OD Network supports its members in their work in human organization and systems development and offers leadership and scholarship to the profession. The website provides a range of useful resources to practitioners and excerpts from the OD Network's professional journal, OD Practitioner.

Moving Ideas Network (MIN) - CNET's Best of the Web says, "...the breadth and variety of material make [MIN] an excellent source for scholarly or journalistic research. [MIN] offers a serious examination of the issues behind the policies that govern our lives."

Strategic Solutions disseminates information about strategic restructuring to nonprofit leaders, funders, and consultants. This website offers the largest collection of resources available including several reports available for free download; regularly updated FAQs, tips, and case studies, references to books, articles, and websites relevant to strategic restructuring; and information on the Strategic Solutions project, team, and services.
