Board or Bored? Strategies for Building a Fully Engaged Board of Directors

Overview: In this workshop you will:

* Learn about tools you can use that enable board members to better understand their responsibilities and assess their own performance

* Gain an awareness of new models of board operation that engage board members in more meaningful ways of supporting the organization

* Learn about key steps you need to take to identify, recruit, and engage new board members

Who should attend?

* Executive Directors/CEOs of nonprofit organizations

* Board leaders

* Senior staff (e.g., Development Directors) that have significant work with and influence on board development

* Consultants or coaches that help nonprofit organizations build their boards

Details:Are board members at your organization fully engaged or asleep at the wheel? Do you need to find new, more energized members? Do you need to renew and rejuvenate your current members? This four-hour session will look at the tools and techniques available to you to find new members and re-engage the ones who have dozed off.

Facilitator's Bio:Don Crocker is the Executive Director of the Support Center for Nonprofit Management. He brings more than 25 years of experience to his work. He trains and consults in the areas of grant proposal writing, fundraising, board development, and strategic planning. He has held numerous positions in nonprofit organizations in the tri-state area in roles that include board member, grant writer, Director of Research and Development, and Executive Director. dc@supportctr.org

Calvin B. Thomas, Jr. is the President of LodeStar Associates, a training and consulting firm. The Association is a team of highly experienced and skilled professionals who specialize in helping large and small nonprofit and for-profit organizations cultivate an environment to improve individual and organizational performance and healthy growth. Mr. Thomas has over 15 years of experience in consultation services to nonprofit organizations in strategic planning, organizational assessment and development, and board development. He has conducted hundreds of staff development workshops and seminars focusing on customer relations and service, effective communication skills, cultural diversity, leadership development, team building, team mentoring, and facilitation.
